If you have wandered this far through this website then perhaps you are still looking for more internet based amusement. In which case you could do a lot worse than follow some of these links… Matt Byron Petch - who built this site and who is the grand master of the terribly clever 3D illustration. Limelight Management - my very lovely agents.
Gardens (some of whom are also clients) that definitely should be visited. Future Gardens - a wonderful contemporary garden show that runs from June until October. Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute - a truly magical place. Easily accessible from Glasgow. Also (while you are there) don't miss the wonderful Victorian Fernery at Ascog Hall. Cottesbrooke Hall, Northamptonshire - fantastic house, great setting and a very lovely garden. I have just replanted the main borders, Angel Collins has done the Dutch garden and all the pots. Colonsay House- beautiful whether in sun or rain. Great garden on a divine, unspoilt island. Coton Manor - gorgeous mature gardens in Northamptonshire. Rousham - unmissable. Great Dixter - of course Sissinghurst - great gardens and the chance to spot the lesbian.
There are a number of people who struggle through mud and rain... .... to construct and maintain my gardens for me while I stand around and issue (occasionally concise) instructions. Without their skills and efforts my designs would be mere waste paper. Steve Cockell at Garden Design Services (01327 350842) who has built many gardens for me over the years - including my Westonbirt garden and the grotto garden in Chippenham for BBC Small Town Gardens. His jokes are appalling but he is always willing. Allon, Nick etc at Modular-Pro (I have given them two horribly cramped London gardens with which they have coped admirably) Joe Watson and his mob at Cotswold Estates and Gardens Liz Nicholson and Ronnie Graham at Nicholsons Nurseries who work with great aplomb around Oxfordshire - the nursery side also does good trees and hedging. Martin Kelley at Fairwater for ponds, lakes and large rocks (looks foxy in waders as well) David Milsom is the man to call for garden lighting. Admittedly, most of his talk of loadings, amps and stuff goes right over my head but he comes from south London so some of it must make sense. Tony Craddock for shiny, covetable light fittings and having one of the few names that rhymes perfectly with a large fish.
Nurseries of Note
Marina Christopher at Phoenix Perennial Plants for a mouthwatering cornucopia of truly delicious plants - 01420 560695 Robert Mattock for fantastic specimen roses and much sage advice. Crug Farm Plants - a dream nursery at the foot of Mount Snowdon. Their list contains mouthwatering stuff and their packaging is a work of art in itself. Gordon Catlin at Manor Farm Nurseries supplies most of my plants but he is purely a wholesale nursery and gets really grumpy if the general public get through the gates. Orchard Dene Nurseries - suppliers to the great, good and Cleve West. Architectural Plants - beautifully written and exotic list
Containers of Distinction
Oxford Planters for excellent timber containers - including one that I designed with extravagant ribbons of slug deterrent copper snaking across the oak. Sadly nobody has been prescient enough to buy one yet but we live in hope. Italian Terrace for spectacular terracotta.
Photographers of Talent Andrea Jones - always delightful and provides good Presbyterian porridge (cooked by Alasdair Currie). She has photographed all the gardens that have featured in Country Living. Rachel Warne - photographs lots of stuff for Gardens illustrated Jerry Harpur - who first photographed Mount Stuart so beautifully that the rain didn't show. Andrew Lawson - who photographed my Chelsea garden and took one of my favourite photographs of this garden in late summer. Allan Pollok-Morris - lots of Scottish things. Gary Rogers - who photographed Westonbirt and can usually be found hanging around shows, bearded and grinning.
Persons of Great Importance
Alison Heitmann is my invaluable design assistant - even though she lives an inconvenient distance away. Aileen at FAB Accounts does VAT and stuff. Last, but not least, Tina Morris who runs my office with an iron grip (even though it is freezing cold all winter and she has been known to type wearing mittens)
… equally important are the people who should be on this list whom I have shamefully forgotten. When I realise who they are I will update the list. |
